Our inland waterway system is a national treasure. It is beautiful and home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. It also represents a giant economic, social and environmental advantage that has helped shape America. Barge transportation saves over $12 billion dollars annually in transportation savings to America’s economy. What is less known is that barge transportation is safer and better for the environment then both rail and truck. Barges greatly reduce highway congestion and the need for maintenance, and do so while emitting far fewer pollutants. In 2014 the average metric tons of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emitted by barges per million tons of cargo per mile was 15.6. Rail was 21.2 and truck was 154.1.
